ABOUT US
OUR MISSION:
At Black Miami-Dade we democratize access to Miami’s Black history. We envision a community where our past is not made invisible. As public memory and truth-telling are vital to a sense of place and civic engagement , we work towards sharing a fuller story of Miami-Dade County’s history through storytelling, research, archiving, community-based activations and education.
By utilizing the power of the arts, humanities and technology, we anchor Miami’s Black history as a guide to connecting deeper for a more just and democratic future. The contributions, endurance and existence of Black people in Miami deserve to be documented, preserved and shared widely. This work is rooted in the long tradition of national and global movements for the preservation of Black narratives and histories.
why we do it:
It is possible to grow up in Miami and be able to cite Black historical stories from Harlem, Montgomery, or Little Rock —but know little or nothing about comparable stories that happened in this community. Hyperlocal history connects with broader historical narratives while maintaining closeness to this community and revealing stories that may not make into the mainstream.
Miami regularly attracts new residents from across the country and internationally, newcomers should be able to access the vast Black history of Miami-Dade County that dates back to before 1896, the year the City of Miami was founded. Whether you’re a native born Miamian, a transplant, a visitor or a curious student of history; engaging with Miami’s Black past provides guidance, lessons and inspiration for the present and future.
OUR FOUNDER
Black Miami-Dade was founded by award-winning journalist Nadege Green in 2020.
Green, who was born and raised in the county of Dade, is a writer, curator and memory keeper. She created this platform as a thank you and love offering to Miami-Dade’s Black past, present and future.
