give them their flowers
An exhibit of black LGBTQ+ Miami history
March 13- April 23, 2023
Little Haiti Cultural Center Art Gallery, 212 NE 59 TER, Miami, Fl
Give Them Their Flowers is the first ever exhibit to celebrate Miami’s Black LGBTQ+ history and comes at a critical time when Black and queer histories are under attack in Florida.
This exhibit pays homage to Miami’s Black queer history by merging historical research, archival imagery, artifacts, oral histories, video and portraits of Black LGBTQ+ Miamians over the age of 40.
Led by community historian and founder of Black Miami-Dade Nadege Green, Give Them Their Flowers rejects the exclusion of Black queer Miami history in the mainstream historical narratives about Miami.
This exhibit presents works by Miami artists Vanessa Charlot, Kendrick Daye, Woosler Delisfort, Hued Songs and Loni Johnson—and is co-curated with Marie Vickles.
The Miami Herald called it "the most relevant exhibition in Miami right now." ArtForum chose it as a must-see critic's choice. And the Miami community has heralded this historic work of Black queer love and existence as necessary and right on time.
Give Them Their Flowers was made possible with the generous support of Maven Leadership Collective and University of Miami’s Center for Global Black Studies.
